Our latest project - Woodland Adventures

Our new Woodland Adventures project promotes the outdoors ethos we have always believed in at Elswick House. By allowing the children to experience and explore the countryside and local woodland areas, the children learn through play about their natural environment - the birds, the animals, the wildflowers, the trees, their leaves and berries and why they are all so important to us. The programme supports all Areas of Learning, but is particularly relevant to the children’s Understanding of the World.

The specific objectives of Woodland Adventures are:-

  1. To foster in the children an interest in, and appreciation of, trees and woodlands and the rural environment.
  2. To give the children a 'sense of wonder' towards the natural world around them and to encourage them to respect for it.
  3. To teach the children how and why the character of the rural landscape, and particularly our local woodland areas, changes with the seasons.
  4. To challenge and excite the children by exposing them to environments and activities with which they may be unfamiliar.

We believe there are significant benefits to be derived for children playing and learning outside:-

  • It can improve physical fitness, coordination and control;
  • It facilitates social development - making and keeping friends, dealing with problems, working collaboratively;
  • It cultivates creativity, imagination and emotional resilience;
  • It builds confidence and encourages the growth of self-reliance and independence;
  • It develops sensory and aesthetic awareness.

We are aiming for at least one ‘Woodland Adventure’ activity a week, and one or two minibus visits a month.  This is not ‘set in stone’ as some months will provide more opportunities than others, and some months, eg December, there may be little time. The Programme is a guide. The intention is that the children will go out in most weathers and we have to all-weather suits to keep them warm and dry.
